Get to know the artist

Marcel Dettmann's techno has a history reaching back into new wave, post-punk and industrial music. Raised in East Germany, he became part of Berlin's club world, with an OstGut residency beginning in 1999 and a Berghain residency beginning in 2004. Those musical roots give his work a wider frame than the club's name alone.

Sound and context

His production and selections connect techno to earlier electronic music, with visual art another part of the practice. MDR and Ostgut Ton are label trails into his records; compilations and mixes present a different view of his taste.

Fear of Programming, released on Dekmantel in 2022, is a useful album-length introduction. Berghain's programme describes its range from machine-led rhythms to ambient and more abstract electronics. Compare it with his recorded mixes for the difference between producing music and selecting other people's records.
